The land of contrasts where desert and delta come together. Winding on boats through the delta’s braided channels is one of the great African experiences, with always a chance to spot elephants, hippos, crocs and other species along the water. Inland, there are great chances to see lion, leopard and the endangered wild dog in action. With some of the finest luxury safari lodges around, Botswana is a great safari location to combine with Cape Town.

A desert-lovers paradise. We hike the red dunes of Soussesvlei and Namibrand Reserve or even see the land from the air on a hot air balloon safari, stopping at hidden rocky outcrops decorated with ancient stone tools. The private reserves in the north offer wonderful white rhino viewing, big cats and a bushland experience. For the adventurer, the Skeleton Coast is the place to go, its endless dunes extending up the cold shore all the way to Angola.

Great apes await! The endangered mountain gorilla can be approached on thoughtful hikes through the Virunga Mountains led by expert trackers and the rangers who protect these magnificent animals. Spending time up close with gorillas in their natural habitat is one of the iconic African experiences.

The Great Rift Valley. For a luxury safari or remote walking safari, Tanzania is one of the very best destinations with enormous swaths of protected areas to explore, from Ruaha and Selous in the south to Tarangire and Serengeti in the north. You can trek with chimps along Lake Tanganyika, explore the Serengeti wildebeest migration and then cap it off with time in historic Zanzibar, whether on a beach or in the old Stone Town.

The classic East Africa destination, Kenya not only has the famed Masai Mara where one can see the wildebeest migration, big cats and rhino. There are also the private conservancies of Laikipia, the giant tracts of bush in Tsavo and beautiful beach homes along the coast in Watamu and Lamu. For the explorer, Lake Turkana’s Jade Sea is as remote as one can go.

The names say it all: Zanzibar, Seychelles, or Cape Town. All very different, but all unique and ideal places to spend a few days after a safari. You can rest on the beach, explore local cultures and food, scuba dive, snorkel, enjoy historic tours or head offshore to fish or do a marine safari by boat.
